The Culture of Speed and counter culture of Slow Movement

What is Dromology?

Dromology is derived from the Greek ‘dromos’: avenue or race course. The theory of dromology interprets the world and reality as a resultant of velocity. In Paul Virilio’s 1977 essay entitled “Speed and Politics”, the french philosopher makes a compelling case for an interpretation of history, politics and society in the context of speed. Extending the definition of “dromomaniacs”, Virilio argues that speed became the sole agent and measure of progress. He contends, that “there was no ‘industrial revolution’, only ‘dromocratic revolution’; there is no democracy, only dromocracy; there is no strategy, only dromology.”

What is slow movement ?

The slow movement (sometimes capitalised Slow movement or Slow Movement) advocates a cultural shift toward slowing down life's pace.

Dromology is connected with fast movement with context of speediness in the digital era while slow movement is reaction against this movement but when we get retired or free from everything that time this movement will work. If one wants to practice slow movement they have become totally unmatched or they might not walk with this world. Dromology is connected with fast movement and slow movement is a reaction against this fast movement.

Examples:-

TED-Talk on 'In Praise of Slowness'

Journalist Carl Honoré believes the Western world's emphasis on speed erodes health, productivity and quality of life. But there's a backlash brewing, as everyday people start putting the brakes on their all-too-modern lives.

Carl Honore says we are a world obsessed with speed. And our need to do everything faster, to cram more and more into less and less time, it's not making us any happier.

Carl said that yet he has busy schedule but he used to spend some time with his son where he not used watch and any bothering things. So in brief it is a kind of benefit of ‘Slow Movement’. We are going very fast but we have to be more alert about each and everything and specially what happens around us.
